A retreat at HOSHINOYA Kyoto

Hoshinoya Kyoto_HELLO MISS MAY

Beautiful HOSHINOYA Kyoto. It was such a lovely retreat. I felt so close to nature, surrounded by the turquoise blue Oigawa River and forest of Arashiyama.

It’s a unique one-of-a-kind experience, not to be missed, if you’re after a luxury ryokan experience in Japan. It’s by far, my favourite, as everything about HOSHINOYA Kyoto is beautifully designed.

The rooms are very minimal, with soft coloured walls matched with tatami and dark timber flooring. Oh, and I’m in love with the state-of-the-art toilet, the lid opens up automatically when it senses me entering the toilet room. Now, that’s impressive!

We have a Hotaru double with a king size bed, lounge room (which doubles up as a dining room in the morning) and a bathroom overlooking the river. It was very peaceful in the morning, with birds tweeting. Occasionally, the operating tourist train from the opposite side will come around for a quick stop to look over the resort.

There’s a short walk you can do around the resort. It’s very pretty at night as well. It feels like you’re in a 19th century village, as the lanterns are all lit up.

There’s a sake bar and a fine dining experience, which I truly enjoyed. My brother and I had a feast of the Autumn Degustation. It was an 8-course meal, and I can tell you that by the end of the meal, we were so full, we had to make room for dessert. The chef has prepared the dishes according to the availability of ingredients at the local market. As it’s autumn season, there’s a wide variety of mushrooms to be had (which I loved!).

I had a wonderful time staying at HOSHINOYA Kyoto. It’s not everyday I get to stay in a beautiful luxury retreat like this, and am truly grateful to have the opportunity to do so. Thank you HOSHINOYA Resorts for hosting me.

Oh, what a view! Leon- aka @hungrysydneysiders- and I had our mini honeymoon at Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The room we had boasted an awesome view of the Petronas Twin Towers.

Traders is located in the heart of KL situated on the fringe of KLCC park within walking distance of Bukit Bintang bars, restaurants and KL's top shopping malls.

We were  treated to club status and received the 'Club' perks at Traders Hotel which we love! There are complimentary high tea and cocktails in the lounge with more great views to offer.

My favourite has got to be our dinner date at Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill by the new kid on the block, Chef Mun. Scroll down to the next blog post to read all about our 4 course degustation.

Breakfast buffet at Traders Hotel was really yum. There was a wide variety of food to choose from - local Malaysian cuisine, Lebanese dips, English breakfast, salad and pastries.

We had an amazing time at Traders. And we will never forget that gorgeous view of KLCC Twin Towers!

Have a fab weekend folks!

My family and I checked into Lanson Place, Bukit Ceylon in Kuala Lumpur on a week day. We were just over in the capital city of Malaysia, before heading off to the islands on the East Coast. Lanson Place is a multi-award winning complex of serviced residences, with a beautiful view of the cityscape.

I’m loving the modern and sophisticated interior of Lanson Place. It is plush and I feel very much at home. Spacious kitchen and dining area to cook and eat with my family. My favourite has got to be the lounge room for reading.

We had a delicious buffet breakfast. It was wonderful. The setting was intimate. We got to enjoy the view of KLCC while eating our freshly cooked omelette and eggs. There was also a wide selection of yummy pastries, smoked salmon, pastries, breads and a generous selection of cheeses. The cappuccino was tops

I’ve always wanted to stay the night overlooking KLCC Twin Towers, and thank you for having us, Lanson Place. It was a dream come true! A plush and spacious 2 bedroom apartment, a perfect place to relax and unwind with the family.

Have a great day all.

Jamaica Blue : The Signature Harvest Collection

It was a beautiful day to just brunch in Sydney. And I'm loving Jamaica Blue's Signature Harvest Collection. The idea behind it was to celebrate the beauty of great food and to have a natural and locally sourced produce.

Everything was just, simply, yum! I'm loving the breakfast bowls (which I got to try all three of them) - Super Fruit, Vitality and Enrichment Bowls. My favourite has got to be Vitality Bowl. I'm a alfalfa and green peas fan.

The Signature Harvest Collection's salads were just divine. The dreamy name of Ocean & Earth Salad does not disappoint. Beetroot cured salmon with the prettiest garden salad, tossed with the most delicious Seed & Nut Bar. I totally went 'nuts' for the Seed & Nut Bar.

Zucchini Garden Salad was simple and nutritious. I've always loved grilled zucchini and Jamaica Blue makes it a memorable one. This dish was served with rocket and fresh herbs, sprinkled with feta and pumpkin seeds and delicious tahini on the side.

Now, having eaten the Dark Chocolate & Fruit Bar, I have no guilt. Simply knowing it's jampacked with healthy nuts and seeds kind of goodness.

Well, thank you guys at Jamaica Blue for having me and my friend, Ria around for the media launch. We got to meet the lovely nutritionist and chef, Zoe Bingley-Pullin who gave us a tour at the EQ Markets nearby and we got to watch her whip up her favourite wholefood dish, the Enrichment Bowl.

The prettiest table setting I've ever been to this time around. Flowers that I got to bring home to my design studio. Thanks folks and I can't wait to see more of the Signature Harvest Collection!

Have a fab day all!

My Fave Gyptian

I love a good bag, and I found the most gorgeous go-to-bag by Gyptian! Gyptian is a small design label based in Perth, and they make the prettiest bags.

I'm pretty much obsessed with Gyptian's latest Triangle 2.0. Perfect in size, the Triangle 2.0 is made of smooth matt and grain leather, which I simply love. There is even a hidden/secret slot which could easily fits an iPhone or a card. Love it! More images here, on Gyptian's website.

I got a chance to e-meet the founder + designer, Salma El-Batanouny, based in Perth. Check Gyptian out :)

How did Gyptian started?

I have always had a slight obsession with creating things and was making jewellery and handbags while I was at university. Once I completed my degree in civil engineering I spent 5 years working on construction sites. I would find myself appreciating the beauty in the subtle geometric shapes of the structures we were building and would often wonder how I could implement this in everyday objects that I create. Thats when I officially started Gyptian.

What was your dream job when you were a kid?

From as early as I can remember I always wanted to be an astronaut and although that didn’t quite workout I’m very happy on the path I’m on.

My dream bag in 3 words...

Structured, unique and Gyptian of course ;)

Current obsession...

DIY everything, love experimenting with concrete and other materials in my spare time.
